Trinity Part 6

As I sat there in my wheelchair looking at Trinity I noticed something, a pack of cards on her bed table. “Huh. Odd.” I said to myself. I wheeled over beside her and I positioned myself so I could…

Yankees Sweep the Orioles

The Yankees finally gained some momentum on the season after a dismal start to the year. It looked like the Yankees were going to drop to 2–5, but Gleyber saved the day on Thursday with two big home runs. Again, the Yankees were left for dead after more questionable bullpen moves by Boone. However, Clint Frazier saved the day with a HUGE 3 run home run, putting the team up 6–4.

Today was an absolute beatdown. The story could easily be Clint Frazier, who is locked in, had 3 home runs in the last two days, and is batting .412 to start the year. But El Gary had 3 homers today, proving that the best offensive catcher in baseball is finally back.

Sure, a sweep against the Orioles is nothing to pump our chests about. The Orioles could very well go on to win only 50 games on the year as their overpaid “star” Chris Davis may never get another hit in his career. However, the Yankees needed this momentum going into Houston. The start to this year has been way worse than anticipated. Injuries on injuries and a 2–4 start has elevated the panic meter somewhat. A sweep going into Houston is so important, because it alleviates some pressure.

In Houston, the Yankees will have to go against Verlander, Cole, and McHugh, which is a tall order for such a beat-up lineup. While we are riding high off this sweep, we must remember that this team struck out 18 times against the Tigers. Verlander has made us look absolutely foolish over the last few seasons and Cole is an absolute stud. Taking 1 game in Houston and finishing the road trip 4–2 would not be the worst outcome, so Sundays win alleviates the potential for a failed road trip to a degree.

Finally, the Red Sox, who have started 2–8, are in bad shape. We need all the easy wins we can get now. Every game matters, so a sweep agains a bad team (who we just lost 2 of 3 to) is fairly big in the long run. We can’t leave easy wins on the table like we did in 2018. If we want to win the division, we have to be bullies to bad teams and competitive against the good teams. We were bullies on Sunday, so hopefully that positive momentum translates into competitiveness against the former defending champs Astros.

Key takeaways from this series:

Food for thought..on to Houston.
