Culture of Mormonism

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I used to view myself as a Mormon as well. The thing is though, Mormon is the easy way out, the simplified version that we use because saying The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints just takes up too much time. I know because I was one of those people. A Mormon because it was fast and easy to say. A Mormon because that is the term that everyone knows us by. I don’t want to be a Mormon anymore, I want to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the main reason is this aspect we don’t quite realize is there: Mormon culture. Every religion has their own to a degree but I feel like Mormonism is the worst. We are all trying so hard to be good people that we add to this culture without thinking what effect we are making. Take for example, perfectionism. This is a big problem in general but in the Mormon culture it is blown up by at least a 100%. It is good to do our very best, but when it gets to the point that we can’t fail or else we’re condemning ourselves then we have a problem. Funeral potatoes at a funeral are not mandatory. Hiding your sins and problems is unhealthy and problematic. Not to mention all of the judgement we do. I’m not saying that no one should judge just because it is a commandment, but because it is hurtful and mean. I had a friend who completely did a 180 because no one in the Mormon culture could accept that she wasn’t sure about the Church. Seriously, this is a big problem. And because of this culture and the effects it has had on my life I have decided that I am no longer a Mormon and don’t ever want to be a Mormon again. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
