Why are ads important and where do they exist?

If you are new to digital world, you may have wondered how do sites like Facebook, Google make so much money. Forget Facebook and Google, how is the entire internet running when you don’t pay any of them anything. There are millions of sites in the world, who pays them to be online. The saviour of all those sites you deal with are those horrible Ads. But are they always that bad?

Unfortunately we as people of the internet fail miserably to pay for the internet. When was the last time you remember paying for google, youtube, facebook or any other site which produces content in any form. It’s the simple thing we don’t pay for it and probably never will. Which is why for now ads will remain our hero whether you like it or not; Plus we will continue with our hypocrisy which is ‘I hate ads’ + ‘I want free internet’.

Okay now there are different kind of ads that you see on the internet. We can categorize it into two simple buckets search, content and search.

2. Content ads are pieces of text which comes in between different content.

3. Display ads mostly come with a creative (Image). Display itself can be divided into two major categories:

a. Social Networking Sites

b. Websites and apps

So now you know that Facebook, Twitter and social networking sites fall under Display -> Social. These ads are controlled by themselves and have their own ways to push ads to these sites. There are a couple of other high traffic websites who serve ads on their platform using their own technology. For the rest 99.9999% of the internet, people use third party companies for placing ads on their website. You might have heard of Adsense which is Google’s way to monetize your website. There are hundred’s more like these. We’ll come back to them later.
