Bobcat Media Productions kicks off semester with short film on racism

A student led production team has shot a short film addressing racism in a professional work environment.

The GC Bobcat Media Productions club’s first project is titled “Respectable Negro Network.”

Surafel Kassa, a senior mass communication major wrote the script. “I wanted to show a different type of racism,” says Kassa, “what one might confront during informal, friendly conversation.”

“Respectable Negro Network,” follows a black man during a job interview in which politics becomes a topic of conversation and racist comments are made.

News anchors comment on how well the man navigates the tense encounter.

The film emphasizes that people of color have to control what they say to not come across intimidating or standoffish.

“In the script, the black lives matter campaign is mentioned and there is a little bit of black lives matter vs all lives matter debate and the script is written from the perspective of a black man by a black man,” BMP co-president Hetty Bishop said, “It’s something that isn’t touched on often considering our schools demographic.”

GC admissions reports an 84.3 percent white student body.

“I hope the short film is refreshing to minorities at GC,” Kassa said.

Filming concluded on Saturday, Sept. 28.
