I worked a full-time job, so my spare time consisting of 6 hours was all I had for my coding fundamentals. It took me almost six months to remember the fundamentals behind data structures and Swift programming language syntax. It was not until I made some dramatic changes to my studying time and mindset that I found myself learning faster than before.

Whenever you begin to make a dramatic change in your life, your mindset needs to be adjusted just as you learn something new. First, you must ask yourself why you are learning to program. What is the reason you picked this language from other programming languages available?

There are plenty of resources that will teach you how to program with Swift, and they guarantee you will learn the programming language at set time period. But the harsh reality is no matter the subscription you pay every month or the top-end laptop you have. It will make no difference at all.

The knowledge you will receive on the Udemy course or youtube video can give you an abundant amount of knowledge to master any programming language. But if you don’t learn to tame your mindset in concentrating, you will find yourself confused and bored. So how do we tame our mindset? It’s called Deep Learning.

Let us imagine you are studying and surrounded by loud noises and notifications on your phone blowing up. How do you react? Do you get caught between everything going on or do you find yourself checking your phone every 20 minutes? The simple way of getting into a deep learning state is by clearing your mindset and allowing your brain to process only necessary thoughts about what you are learning.

Music
music is an excellent way of helping your mind relax and focus on only the necessary concepts on hand. Keep in mind that specific music can be helpful, such as classical, jazz, instrumental, and other great genres that focus the mind.

Who does not like reading a book or watching youtube tutorials? Books are probably one best resource to obtain helpful knowledge about programming and Swift language. When you learn to focus your mindset, reading a book becomes extremely easy. Avoid minimum distractions and avoid reading more than you can retain. For example, reading one chapter sounds pretty straightforward, but sometimes it can be complicated to focus only on one chapter with thirty pages left.

Read ten pages and take notes and ideas of what you learned. Then, ask yourself questions and challenge yourself with the book’s examples and fundamentals it covers. after those ten pages, finish up your notes and read another ten pages. Your end goal is to finish one chapter by retaining and writing good notes on the concepts at hand. If your book has fewer pages to read within a chapter, execute the same idea and see how quickly you can finish one chapter and retain the knowledge.

Videos are another effective way of learning Swift programming language. But understand that it’s harder to learn how to program when you watch tutorials and not practice the concepts. And if you are like me, sometimes its complex to take notes depending on the instructor that’s teaching the concepts.

The majority of videos can be around 10–15 minutes long, and the amount of information the instructor can be teaching can go on for a long time. Watch 8 minutes of video and do a quick pause before watching anything else. Utilize this time to take notes and information that the instructor was teaching. It should be pretty short but move at your pace.

Whenever you finish reading a chapter or watching a video, the instructor or author will usually leave some practice questions to answer at the end of the lecture. Take them seriously and use the time to answer the questions. Your mind needs to be challenged to grasp the concepts. If you avoid doing those practice questions, you’re telling yourself I will forget this and relearn it later. Don’t waste your time and strengthen your fundamentals by truly learning the concepts.

We always want to learn something new but remember to put breaks on before jumping into another concept. If you don’t understand the first thing you learned, what makes you think you will understand the next topic of instruction? Don’t island-jump between new things but focus on one topic until you don’t need your notes anymore. The training wheels won’t keep working if you overwork them. So take it slow and grasp everything until you can code without your notes or reference.

I think we all are told this when we start learning a new programming language. And this is 100% true. It would help if you implemented small projects that correspond with what topic you are learning. An example could be if you know arrays, then create a shopping cart app that implements the case with arrays.

Master The Syntax Before Anything Else

You don’t want to make one mistake by jumping into a massive project app before you entirely understand programming syntax. So before you think of creating the next Instagram or following a youtube tutorial on building a Facebook clone, make sure you know the swift language. Understand what the instructor is using fundamentally, so you’re actually gaining knowledge and not just going with video.

The result is when you decide to become a developer, and you’re investing in yourself. It’s a long process, but it’s worth it at the end of the day because not only is it challenging but rewarding.
