A Diary for Generic Sentiments

Walk into any Barnes&Nobles and you will find (owing to the generic layout of most branches, to left of the double-door entrance) the journal section. It is the section of books to be filled, empty structures of titillating beauty awaiting consummation/baptism by ink, depending on your euphemistic preference.

First thought: god, these things are expensive. Second thought: which one do I buy (presuming you have, under the romantic vision of the sumptuous scribblings with which you will fill said journal, found yourself walking, while fully conscious, into the journal section of the Barnes&Nobles because, despite your best efforts to be more economically sensible, none of the journals available in the Staples or Office Depot quite did it for you,eh?)?

And here you are. If you had an idea of what you wanted, which if you value your sanity you have indeed armed yourself with, the only certain thing is that you will not find it. Well, you might find it, but if you do it will be so expensive that your brain will immediately launch into a complex debate over whether it’s really worth it to get the particular design you dreamed about when your desire for it is really just another instance of you getting played by advertising so why not simply switch out one image for another and get a journal that serves your needs — as indeed, a heap of typing paper probably would — and avoid the guilt of having spent so much on what will ultimately be a collection of the detritus of your mind made incarnate and which you will probably want to get rid of in a ritual cleansing fireball soon after having completed it…

But here you are. The shelves of colored and uncolored and lined and unlined and dotted and red-dotted and dated and undated journals reaching to the horizon… You survey your choices:

First come the more professional and well-disciplined varieties, the most dominant, pervasive, expensive, and modern.
