Florida highway patrol reports high wait times

Inches away from flying cars, Shayley Rufh feared for her life as she waited for Florida Highway Patrol in the 5-foot median.

Rufh’s car stalled in the Interstate 4 express lanes stranding her in the island between dual-direction death. Rufh said she called the Highway Patrol immediately after fleeing her smoking car.

“I genuinely thought I was going to die,” she said. “My brain had just kind of accepted death when the smoke came inside my car.”

Rufh said in the time it took a highway patrol officer to reach her, she had help from the fire department and a police officer, both of which were on opposite sides of traffic. Both officers left her on the side of the road, promising the proximate arrival of highway patrol, Rufh said.

Still, Rufh said they were little help. Rufh said the guy from the fire department told her he’d rather ‘go into a burning building than stand where she was,’ before driving away.

As of eight hours into March 8, the highway patrol already received 16 emergency calls. 14 were vehicle crashes, one was a hit-and-run and one was a disabled vehicle. Of these 16, only six were registered as resolved, with an average of 90 minutes between.

“Response times vary from crash to crash, but there is a reason behind all of this,” Montiero said. “A few things come into play when it comes to determining how fast a law enforcement officer will get to your scene.”

Montiero said the response time varies based on the severity of the crash and any injuries reported.

In the 2021 interview, Montiero also said there were only 2,000 state troopers in Florida which contributes to the delay.

Rufh said her wait time was ridiculous, especially considering her safety.

“Just because I wasn’t already dead doesn’t mean they shouldn’t care,” she said.
