4 Lessons I learned from my degree in journalism

By the end of my Journalism degree program, I could write better news and blog articles. I was already a pretty good writer before I started but a degree in journalism really gave me the structure I needed to be a better writer. Once I knew the rules of AP writing, I realized I could be more creative in my personal projects, which is something I’m really thankful for.

I also learned the importance of targeting your audience. As a journalism writer, you’re not really writing for your personal enjoyment, you’re writing for the audience. It’s important to know what will catch their attention and how to keep it throughout the article. There are two types of stories: hard stories and soft stories. Hard stories are news stories that inform the audience while soft stories are feature stories about human interest pieces. These are generally stories that are not as hard-hitting news pieces. I really enjoyed writing stories about human interest because everyone has a story that’s worth sharing with the public.

Also, I learned the ethics and laws of journalism. These are important to know to keep the writers from getting into legal trouble. These are important to know but I won’t get into the boring jargon. You should read about it yourself if you’re interested in that type of thing.

Finally, I really like how Journalism classes helped me really understand how to read a newspaper. Before I took classes, I would always get lost reading stories because I never knew where they started and ended but taking these courses really gave me the appreciation for Journalism writing and how the design of a newspaper is meant to be read.
