The geezer with the dodgy tats was bogging me out; I was on borrowed time in the boozer. He was onto me. I had minutes to get my info and quit. Liverpool Street nick was on the doorstep and I could always rely on some of the squad there. Tony the Hammer gave me another stinking look and bought a round for his lads. I downed my coke and made for the door of Hamilton Hall. Tony’s boy Keith barred my way ‘right, Jock, what’s the script?’ I shrugged with as much swagger as I could muster ‘you wanker…Tony wants to buy you a drink’. I eased a bit as he put a friendly arm round my shoulder. Tony smiled, a lizard grin and ushered me over ‘alright, boss? You been quiet this week, eh’ the ‘eh’ was an accusation in Estuary English as I accepted the pint and short. Tony looked relaxed with his posse of five. Hard lads. Bethnal Green moved to Chingford. I smiled thinly and continued to me schtum. Least said, soonest mended. It was only then that I felt the blade in my left kidney ‘you got about a minute, cozzer…’ was all I heard as the bar swam in front of me, I staggered , summoning up as much strength as I could, but knew I’d never make the door never mind the tantalising 40 metres to the cop shop. I was finished. I looked up, as I fell to the ground, Tony and the lads already clearing out. Just another casualty in a stupid and pointless turf war. I tried to speak. My last words?
