Assistive Technology Tools and Software reviews

Bold-Ed

A Guide for Students and Professionals.

Assistive technology is useful for those who are visually impaired and those with Specific Learning Difficulties (SPLD). It says time and it helps individuals overcome challenges they may face when it comes to the organisation of notes and retaining learning content.

Individuals who have Dyslexia and other neuro diversities may find mind mapping a useful strategy to help with essay planning and notetaking. A useful mind mapping software is called Mindview by Matchware. It's a mind mapping software that can allow you to make a mindmap freely, in which you can add images, branch links and colour to make the mindmap aesthetically pleasing. These mindmaps can later be exported into different formats such as JPEG image, Microsoft Word doc, PowerPoint presentation and excel as well as PDF export option as well. There are many perks of this software, as it helps with the organisation for an essay plan as provided below.

This is dictation software that allows an individual to freely speak to the screen without the need for typing. This software is good to use with a Plantronics headset and it consists of voice recognition by creating a user profile. It saves time from typing the information via the keyboard. It allows the individual to dictate ideas and allow them to see their words appear on the computer screen. You can dictate words on an email, internet search and an essay paragraph. Sometimes it's hard to get words on the paper so this a great of getting ideas onto the screen. Not only you can dictate words, but you can also give commands as well as navigate movements as well.

This is another form of Assistive technology that is useful for students and individuals with learning difficulties such as Dyslexia, ADHD and other learning difficulties. It’s an easy text to speech software that can help with word predictions, pronunciation and reading screens. This also can come with the screen ruler which consists of a reading ruler and screen colour, tinter. This is beneficial for helps anyone who has problems keeping focus while reading from the page. Other tools this software includes are ClaroCapture- a study tool, Claroideas- mind mapping tool and Claroview.

To summarise, these Softwares may be useful for people with learning difficulties, I use them myself especially since I am a University Student that uses assistive technology. These Softwares are useful for organising notes, improving readability, memory retention and enhance productivity levels. Some Softwares are more frequently used than others. However, each of these Softwares has benefits of use in terms of being forms of assistive technology. It is best to check what Softwares and tools are useful and beneficial for you.
