Meeting Artists

Growing up surrounded by people who never talked about art, made me realize very soon that I have no reference whatsoever to how artists are and how they think. The only thing, I used to know were the people on Instagram who drew mangas and myself. I let myself be inspired by a lot of comic artists and it showed when I met artists in my highschool.

These were just classmates of mine but looking at their art style made me realize that the world of art was much bigger than I thought. One friend of mine drew a lot of cars and another one was into mangas as well. One of my now closest friends always drew semi-realism. What inspired them? Why do these people draw? My close friend who draws semi-realism is for example inspired by a lot of children’s series but the art style upgraded to a point where you can almost not tell.

Getting a bit older I also started going to museums and being interested in paintings. Van Gogh’s “experience” museum was probably one of the places that had a huge impact on my view of artists.

I was amazed at how much inspiration Van Gogh took from artists he got to know and you could see it in his paintings too. He felt human. After many years of almost knowing nothing about historical artists, he was there. Feeling more alive than in most drawings that I saw. The same feeling that I got after reading a book about Frida Kahlo. She lived a miserable life but did mistakes too. Her life was in misery because she could not get children. Because her husband cheated on her so many times. Because she could not let go. She felt human. This was my first touch with artists that did their work not as a hobby but as a lifestyle. And I got to meet them by doing research about them.

“Meeting Artist” means also, meeting artists that you do not understand. It was very difficult but I can kinda see the thought process of a lot of historical artists but something no one tells you until you see it for yourself are artists that live today and you cannot understand what is going on in their brain whatsoever.

I was in an art course at my university. That was the nerdiest art thing I ever did because a german artist was the leader of the course and the other four artists were the biggest spectrum of artists that I ever saw in my life.

The first person is preparing to teach art in elementary school and had a very simple art style. She drew what she saw and it was so children friendly. She seemed to catch every positive emotion in her drawings and drew leaves and other cute things. I really liked her because she did not try to create masterpieces but to create art that is fun.

The second person was a boy who studies “aesthetic education”, he was there for fun. I could not tell this from the first second but at some point, he got really into it and started using materials that I could not even think of. The instructor was a bit overwhelmed with his enthusiasm but I think it is really great to find people that have so much fun just with drawing.

The third person studies “culture science” and he was weird. That is my own personal opinion. Because this is a blog it should not be bad to post my own opinion but I just want to say first, I am kinda biased. He was drawing wires because he had a passion for wires (that is what he said, at least). They were in reddish colors and I thought it looked pretty cool until he started interpreting life and death in the drawing. Do not get me wrong, I think it is amazing to interpret stuff into art and if you have read my other blog posts you can tell that I really am passionate about art. But in that case, it was weird because he also started talking about his relationship problems and we did not even know what to do with this information. We stood there and listened. But another girl turned to me and went immediately like “Why did he say that?” because he started oversharing to strangers who just wanted to know his thought process. Like I said not a bad thing just, very new and unusual.

The last person and the girl who talked to me about the culture science student was studying to be a teacher for middle school and she wanted to be an artist and religion teacher. She was very chill and I talked the most with her. She came there to find time to do art. Her art style was very chaotic and I could tell that she did whatever came to her mind. The art style was not really my cup of tea but this was beautiful because it looked like she drew it for herself.

All of these people are artists. I do not understand a lot of them and maybe there are even people I try to avoid but maybe this is how I seem to other people too. Maybe some people look at my drawings and think that this is so boring and maybe they do not understand how I try to capture my feelings with drawings and this is okay. Art is for yourself and the only way to understand why people draw is to let them talk. Otherwise, I would have thought the wires are cuts and the leaves are badly drawn. But knowing what these people think of their own drawings makes them feel alive. I could already tell that a lot of my art changed after finding out how other people think. I think that is beautiful.
